Mojtaba Saheli was involved in a fight in 2009 during which, he blinded someone. He received a ten year prison sentence and in March 2015, was forced to have his eye gouged out in a classic “eye-for-an-eye” case. He remained in prison, blinded in one eye and was told to procure “blood money” for the victim and his family in order to save his second eye.
Unfortunately, Saheli couldn’t get enough money together so now the authorities are planning to gouge his second eye.

What does the victim do? The perpetrator was sentenced to ten years for his crime.If it is the case of “an eye for an eye” Mojtata Saheli should never have received a custodial semtence, but had both of his eyes gouged out.

Why now gouge out your eyes in a display of solidarity? …..didn’t think so. But you think you can lecture a blinded man on what he should do for the man that blinded him? Too many victims being told here in the west to suck it up… while rapists. .murderers. .thieves etc etc laugh up their sleeves at them…while we fall out over ourselves trying to be more pc than the next. The victims need to be put back front and centre …. trust me that by doing so we would have less victims. Is that not desirable?

You all talk about the poor perpetrator loosing his eye but what about the poor victim whom he caused by his actions to be blinded .He will never see again because of that persons actions .
To me that is justice . If more if this was done people would quickly start to be more careful of their actions and we would have a lot less victims in the first places .
Is it just to let people do what ever you like to some one and not pay an equal price ?
That is the reason why we live in a world were people’s lives are destroyed by others and it continues to get worse.

Since you nor any of us KNOW the facts about the original incident, your comments are out-of-line and uncalled for. The article says he “was involved in a fight in 2009 during which, he blinded someone.” Like my mom used to say when my brother and I were kids…..it takes two to “fight” which is why we were both punished until I finally learned to walk away to avoid being grounded and my weekends ruined. If it had been a one-sided attack in which the victim was blinded, then your comments would certainly be more appropriate. But, again, we do not know the details of what happened. All that we do know is that taking this man’s only means of eyesight will not help anyone. This should be about justice, not vengeance. Why not extend the deadline to pay restitution to the blind man as ordered by the court ordered? He apparently has raised part of the amount, so what will happen to that? And, why wasn’t he asked by the writer or the court what it is that HE wants to happen at this point? I believe that he’d consider the prisoner’s loss of one eye to be enough, provided that he and his family are also appropriately compensated financially. Which will most likely never happen if the prisoner is rendered completely blind as well. Nothing about this story makes any sense, including your barbaric sense of “justice” which you have clearly confused with vengeance.

Let common-sense prevail! If the victim is demanding “blood money,” which at the present time Mojtata Saheli cannot raise, then surely the sensible thing to do is when he is released from prison and finds employment,a contract is drawn-up where a percentage is pledged to the victim.

it is never OK to commit a crime against another person, whatever the consequences to the victim. however treating the criminal who committed the crime in the same way as his/her victim is not justice. it simply makes the state as bad as the criminal. which is why virtually no civilised country has capital punishment. and if your going to quote the bible about an eye for a eye at least get it right. this old testament statement was disowned by Jesus Christ. is this world really all about retribution and revenge? that bible people love to quote also says “revenge is mine said the Lord”. at least dont try to pass the responsibility for such punishments onto God that most dont seem to believe in anymore. Mahatma Gandhi was a wise man at least listen to his words.

A barbaric punishment. The law of ‘an eye for an eye ‘ was intended to stop the then practice of blood feuds, which went on for generations. Contrary to what Ghandi said, it left only 2 people blind – the victim and the perpetrator. Also, it was not compulsory. As the Hebrew prophets themselves said, ‘mercy triumphs over judgement ‘, which is what Christ commended to us. Would that Iran would get that message.

This is the sometimes barbaric laws that Iranians live under. Google for “mojtaba saheli prisoner acid attack”, and you will see what caused the blinding. I doubt that our compassion with criminals will steer Iranian people and law-makers away from revenge. Sentencing him to prison is another form of revenge. Taking x% of his possible future salary will allow him to repay if he choose to work at all but might also lead to poverty for him and his wife and his children creating more victims.
God will decide what punishment is right for him. Those who show compassion; God bless you for it. The world will not be righteous until Messias returns.
