Blurring of “private” and “public” spheres in Iran

The Iranian judiciary and authorities are expanding the definition of “public” spheres, in order to inforce veiling and maintain utmost control. Recently, even private vehicles were branded by police control as public spaces, thus facilitating mandatory veiling and all public regulations. Even private complexes are now being scrutinized by the morality police. The expansion of public zones has a direct negative impact on the freedom of the people. Intelligence Minister, Mahmud Alavi, has been quoted warning against violating people’s privacy. He said “We have no right to stick our noses into peoples’ private life”. Commitments do not match the reality.
