HR situation in Iran has worsened

The newly issued UK Human Rights priority country report, released February 2017, for the period of January to June 2016, notes in relation to Iran that the situation in Iran has worsened, despite President Rouhani pledging to improve the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Iran. They highlight executions as a serious concern, the violation of the Convention on the rights of the child with juvenile offender’s executions, a crackdown on social media use and freedom of expression, persecution and harassment of minority religions, lack of access to independent lawyers, “dreadful” prison conditions including sexual harassment of detainees, the detainment of human rights defenders and political prisoners, gender discrimination and more.
