Iranian women need husband’s permission to leave country

It was hoped that an amendment to article 18 of the Passport Law in Iran would bring an ease to the discriminatory gender law requiring the husband’s permission for his wife to travel abroad. This is not the case. The new amendment does make it easier for specific categories of women travel, by listing exceptions, but the basic requirement of the husband’s permission (or prosecutor permission) remains intact. Married men do not require travel permission from their wives.
