Iranian-American art gallerists in jail

The founders of Aun art gallery, Karan Vafadari and Afarin Nayssari, an Iranian-American couple, have been officially charged with accusations of trying to overthrow the regime in Iran. They have been held in custody since July 2016, denied access to legal counsel and frequently placed in solitary confinement. Human rights organizations have denounced these charges as false and baseless. The Italian ambassador to Iran (2003-2008) called for their release in an open letter, stating “their detention is not only despicable because of its blatant injustice”, testifying also to their character he wrote: “Karan Vafadari and Afarin Niasari are among the most refined, the most exquisite, the most dignified people I have met during the five years I spent as Italy’s ambassador to Tehran”.
