Tehran won’t sign UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

That’s right: Tehran will not sign the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The reason behind the refusal is that children in Iran undergo “military training” at a young age (9 for girls, 15 for boys) through the Basij (The Organization for Mobilization of the Oppressed), an influential voluntary paramilitary organization which supports the regime in many ways: it manages schools and military camps, helps to manage the morality police etc… and is under direct orders from the IRGC. The Basij’s duty is to “create the necessary capabilities in all individuals believing in the Constitution and the goals of the Islamic Republic to defend the country, the regime of the Islamic Republic, and aid people in cases of disasters and unexpected events” and has a core membership of 100,000-200,000 but has mobilized over 1 million Iranians in the past. Signing the convention would force the closure of the Basij schools and end the military training of Iranian youths. https://english.alarabiya.net/en/perspective/2016/10/02/Controversy-in-Iran-on-child-rights-convention.html
