UN bashes Iran again over human rights

ahmed shaheed

The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Mr. Ahmed Shaheed, didn’t mince any words in his latest criticism of human rights in Iran following the executions of 12  Iranians on charges of drug trafficking: “The execution of individuals for drug-related offences is simply illegal…Combating drug trafficking, a serious concern in Iran, does not justify the use of the death penalty in drug-related cases…The execution of Mr. Madadpour and 11 others shows the Iranian authorities’ complete disregard of its obligations under international human rights law and especially of international fair trial standards and due process guarantees”.

In Mr. Madapour’s case, his trial lasted 20 minutes and he had never met his lawyer prior to the actual trial.

Tehran’s response? The reports are baseless and politicized lies and there is no need for a special rapporteur for Iran.
