Atena Farghadani to be freed at last

Atena Farghadani, the Iranian cartoonist sentenced to 12years and 9 months in jail for drawing and posting a caricature of Iranian members of parliament as animals in protest of laws to impede the sale of contraceptives has her sentenced reduced to 18 months which means that she should be freed over the next few weeks. Experts point out that the reduction in her sentence is a result of pressure placed by NGO’s promoting free speech and that this is a sign that campaigns from outside Iran are impactful. Farghadani suffered innumerable hardships while in jail including a virginity test and several hunger strikes.
